Hungarian government suggests banning gender studies

The Hungarian government, Ministry of Human Capacities (EMMI) and the Ministry of Justice, has suggested a legislative measure to ban gender studies MA programs and degrees, allowing merely 24 hours for the responsible at the university to respond. The Swedish Association for Gender Researchers condemn this suggestion and process. As Swedish academicians and gender researchers we express our deepest concerns over this situation. It is a serious threat against academic freedom and autonomy. As researchers we are severely worried about how religious fundamentalist, racist and conservative social networks, which work against feminism, gender equality, and LGBTQ-rights, influence the societal development of Europe. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues and students at the Departments for Gender studies in Hungary in their struggle for a very important discipline and field of knowledge
